Anonymous1: @Suzuka: Because there's an extensive fanon going on. The show itself is good, but it's the fan culture that makes up the main attraction, and the fact that on occasion the show creators even implement fan ideas in the series makes it even better.
It's the same deal as with Touhou. The series itself is a mildly enjoyable 2D danmaku shooter developed and owned solely by one guy, but its fanon blew it out to immense popularity and achieved it global recognition. Even though half of people in the fandom never even played the actual games.

The Sonic fandom is like your any other fandom, maybe bigger than average but it lacks the organization, unity and hivemind of MLP and Touhou fans. Sonic fans don't really go as far as to establish their ideas to such degree that they're universally accepted by everyone in the fandom.
