Anonymous3(2): It's highly debatable whether the ponies have a fur coat or not. It's made to appear more like skin and it works like skin.
- Twilight got a papercut on her face in It's About Time. Even a thin coat of fur would have protected her from it if it was there, and if not, it would at least cover up the wound.
- The unicorn horns being the same color as fur doesn't make sense (why not the color of the mane then?), but it somewhat does if it's skin instead of fur.
- When ponies are slapped it makes a distinctive sound of skin slap, not the sound you'd hear when slapping something with fur.
There is more evidence in skin's favor, but in favor of hair I can think of only one:
- Some large colts like Big Mac have wavy color separation on their legs suggesting unshorn fetlocks. But it could be just an unusual way to define hooves.
The_Elder_Troll: @Gomenasai: honestly what I think of is like they have their fur, and for privacy they use matching colored fur patches to cover the privates, and when they want to use those "privates" they remove the patches, it's sort of like blending in underwear but just in small patches. And bro remember this is a kid show, not everything is gonna make sense.
Anonymous4(2): @The_Elder_Troll: Simplified designs always leave a lot to imagination. I remember numerous debates about fur VS skin on Porkyman message boards, it's probably one of those times when not even the design creators can't answer for sure if their characters have fur or skin, it's intended to be ambiguous.
Regardless, the FiM animation studio seems to have decided on skin.
Faptacular: @Gomenasai: Well in the first episode Twi specifically said: "Let's get out of here before she tries to dye my coat a different color!" when she met Rarity. Personally that's all I need to confirm fur. (Though some people will argue an equine's coat is closer to a hair standard than a fur one.)
More often than not not only sound-effects but even basic concepts get modified to make more sense to a mass audience (or at least causes a refrigerator logic moment) and they go with quick and easy rather than a slightly more cerebral approach.
Just think of all the gladiator movies where the thumbs up/down thing gets reversed just because of how it's used currently rather than being historically accurate.

@jubilation_t_cornpone: Yeah I've never gotten the appeal of putting pubes on anthros. And this is coming from a guy who loves bush.
