Anonymous3(2): @Anonymous: ninja turtles is a canon multiverse. All of the versions of April O’neil and the turtles still exist in their own universes. If you actually watched the 2003 and 2012 series, you’d know this.. as for diversity, Ninja turtles has always been a diverse series. There’s literally no reason to not have April be black or Asian or a mutant or even a man in a ninja turtles series because it’s a damn multiverse.
It literally doesn’t matter if she were white or black in the original comic. None ot]f the other iterations of April are the April from the original comic. It’s a multiverse. April can legit be anything in any given universe. It should be all good. Baxter stockman was black in the original comic. Making him white in the 80’s show didn’t take away from the original iteration one bit. April’s ethnicity isn’t an intrinsic or important part of her character at all. It never was.
Anonymous9(2): @Anonymous: yeah but Thor’s Ethnicity as a Norse God is easily the #1 most important part of his character. April’s whiteness is probably somewhere close to never mentioned or addressed with any importance or gravity in all of Turtles media barring an afterschool special issue on racism or something.
Anonymous10(5): Agreed again. But whenever you change something unimportant so drastically, it sticks out for some reason, and thus is likely done on purpose. Seldom a good purpose either. Idris Elba for example is kidding himself if he believes his casting as Heimdall was anything but a publicity stunt.
I am unsure whether this is as large a change as 2003->2012 April, to be honest, but I remain sceptical of every show acting like this.
Anonymous13(2): @Anonymous: well in MCU the asgardians are officially aliens so they can be played by pretty much anyone as long as the main gods like Thor, loki and odin fit the Norse look for a whole “the look like us worship them” sorta thing. Remember, MCU is NOT 616 at all. I think Idris Elba played the roll as Heimdall (a non-god in marvel) and he looked cool. If your only complaint about him playing a bit role as Heimdall is his skin color then it certainly wasn’t a publicity stunt because Idris Elba’s name isn’t putting butts in seats.i don’t think anybody ever cared about heimdall’s Ethnicity. If wil Smith showed up playing Thor, then it would be an issue unless it’s like some sort of thing where his character was just worthy of fitting the hammer ad having the power of Thor nstead of being Thor Odenson.
As for the change from 2003 -> 2012. It’s a established multiverse. No change has really even made. Just different commonalities between different universes or timelines. They could very easily make an episode or movie where 2012 and rise characters could meet and team up, or instance. That’s what happened in Turtles forever and there was an episode where 2012 turtles met 80’s turtles and teamed up with them.
atozed: I wouldn't be surprised if April's design is a call back to that early recolored (re-released?) issue where someone shaded in April darker than usual, possibly based on her really poofy hair at the time. It probably wasn't so much intended to be textured hair as just really big 80s hair that was popular at the time, but it would be a funny injoke. Either way, stay buttmad.
atozed: @Anonymous: Plus it ignores the fact people inspired/worshipped/fictionalized by foreign people IRL were typically redesigned (intentionally or not) to be more appealing to the local culture anyway, which is how you get ancient drawings of Jesus looking Chinese in China, Ethiopian in South Saharan Africa, etc.
