As far as I understand it only the names of the ponies and their cutie marks are trademarked by Hasbro, so when Saddle Up was being made, initially the idea was to leave out or alter the marks and to not mention the ponies by name to avoid potential legal action. Apparently this plan was dropped mid way through making the pack though; possibly because it ended up as a free release, or because the organisers didn't deem that kind of safety precaution necessary (it may still be protected under parody law so long as no money is being made, for instance).
Nuxersopus: @Roflcakes: Well, THAT is silly. Even if it makes sense. You know exactly that this is related to mlp and you know what pony this pony is supposed to be, but it is not under copyright law, even though you should be prohibited from publishing this (for money)
