Aisu: Having hot on the left and cold on the right is not at all uncommon. Definitely a minority of taps have it like that but in my experience there are plenty of taps like that...especially the farther you go north.
bdoth: In Nebraska, my shower nob has hot on the left and cold on the right. Also you turn it all the way cold to turn off the water. So it starts cold, just turn it fast or else you get a burst of frozen water. brrrrrrr.
Anonymous28: @anon23: a lot of older houses do, mine included. usually small "privacy" windows are the only kind in showers and in my personal experience the only ones that have a straight view into the shower are on second floors or higher.
